Syntax (Week 10)

We have learned that syntax is the study of morphemes as the building blocks that go to make up words. Words are put together to form sentences. The words that are put together to form sentences is the syntax of the language which it is arranged in certain order to creates meaning.

There are 7 rules in syntax. The first rule is the combination of words into phrases and phrases to sentences. Second is describes the relationship between the meaning of a particular group of words and the arrangement of those words. Third, specify the grammatical relations of a sentence such as subject and direct object. Fourth, specify constraints a sentence must adhere to in order to be grammatical. Fifth, includes knowledge of how words from groups in sentence or how they are hierarchically arranged. Sixth, there are instances of structural ambiguity. Seventh, produce and understand a limitless number of sentences.

As for me, I found that this lesson quite confusing because we have to identify the types of sentence and phrases.

Phonology & Morphology (Week4-9)

This week we have learned about Phonology and morphology.

Phonology is a study of how sounds are produced in the English system. In English sounds, there are vowel/diphthong sounds and consonant sounds. The most important in phonology is the pronunciation. The speech organs in human play an important role in producing the accurate sound to certain pronunciation. There is phonetic script (International Phonetic Alphabet) to represent the accurate pronunciation of sound. For example, “feel” = / fi:l / ; I found myself difficult in differentiating and confused on certain sound’s script, maybe because of the symbol that looks unfamiliar in English daily usage.

For practice, in groups we need to present at least 5 minimal pairs with initial, medial and final phoneme. For example for the sound “p” and “b”;

Initial= park & bark; medial= simple & symbol; final= cop & cob. At first, we found it is difficult to search for the pairs, but after we had discussed together and searched some information from the internet, we finally managed to get the minimal pairs.

We also learnt about Morphology. Morphology is a study of morphemes of a language. Each language has its own sound and meaning. Morphology is the smallest units of word that related to sound and meaning. The morphemes is the unit that combines with other morphemes to form the next unit, or word.

At first, I think that morphology was hard to understand. But as Mdm. Ira explained to us and gave us more examples, I managed to absorb a bit of the inputs…I hope that I can remember those for the exam… (^_^)

“Mdm, thanks for the plenty of notes for us”
